Vacancy: Internship Data-Ethics
Starting september 2024, Filosofie in actie offers multiple internships (University or University of Applied Science, BA/MA) for approximately 12-15 hours a week. As we value diversity, we are interested in people who can broaden the current perspective of our team, from personal perspectives or by their field of study. We encourage you to apply if you recognize yourself in and/or are enthusiastic about the following:
WHAT YOU MAY CONTRIBUTE & LEARN DURING THE WORK PLACEMENT
Research: you will perform research on an internal Filosofie in actie project. Together with our team, you will develop relevant research questions and a research plan. Apart from deskresearch, you will go out into the field and perform your research on location at one of our partners. We intend to work on this project with multiple interns, each covering a specific subdivision of the subject.
You work together closely with our team and might be asked to perform some supportive tasks that will fit your abilities
ABOUT THE PROJECT
We are looking to research how context and design impact ethical issues concerning matching algorithms. These specific algorithms are designed to match people to a service according to pre-set criteria. One example of this is the Netflix algorithm; your viewing behaviours will form the basis for new content the platform will offer you. While these algorithms might seem reasonably harmless, the context and underlying goals behind their use might have less than desirable and possibly far-reaching effects.
We want to dive into these algorithms together in the context of dating apps (i.e. Breeze), HR and security. We are currently in contact with multiple partners operating within these contexts to offer you not only the chance to do desk research, but work in context as well.
WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU
you are attending a university of applied sciences degree programme or university education programme (Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree: guidance from an advisor at your institute and receiving of credits are mandatory requirements)
have an interest in technology and its place in society
you have an affinity with philosophy, ethics, AI and algorithms, privacy and/or other related social issues from a theoretical background and/or as a design researcher (from an art school/University of applied sciences)
you work well independently as well as collaborate with others remotely and on the floor
you know our work and our ‘philosophy’
you are based in the Netherlands and willing to travel to Arnhem
WHAT MAY YOU EXPECT FROM US
You will experience and learn:
how to put philosophy and ethics into practice and address related societal issues
how to combine the intellectual work with executive duties and participating in the teams. You will be given the space and guidance to explore your interests and ambitions within the domain of data-ethics.
Your ideas and initiative are valued. We will decide together on your specific tasks during the workplacement. Your motivation and interests will be leading.
We work on social safety and are open to feedback.
Filosofie in actie works from our office in Arnhem throughout the Netherlands, abroad and online. You will work independently and at your own location, as well as on location (visiting organizations) or at our office. Consultation takes place in Arnhem and via video calling.
You will receive expense allowance.
YES, I AM INTERESTED!
